Objectives

 

The main objectives for doing this activity with the students are:

 

- To promote the necessity and importance of taking care of the environment, resources and recycling.

- To be familiarized with the school´s new technology.

- To learn how to use the web as a great source of information.

- To appreciate the advantages of using the web

- To learn how to work in groups.

- To appreciate the final group product.

 

The t-Process

 

This lesson is clearly organized into four parts:

 

1. The first part involves Science lessons. Students will learn all the concepts we will be dealing with in their own native language. This topic will last two weeks, one period of class each day.

 

2. It will be a multidisciplinary task as it also includes English classes. Students will learn the vocabulary and structures they will need to deal with the topic. This part will take at least one month of classes as there is only two sessions of English a week.

 

3. For the computer part, we will use five sessions to complete the task. In the first session, the class will be introduced to the use of webquests and the guidelines for the project. It will be necessary to have one computer per student and the teacher will guide the process. Students will also be helped by using dictionaries (the use of dictionaries has been clarified beforehand).

 

4. Creation of posters. Students will share all the information they have already collected and they will collaborate by making decisions regarding the most important issues.

 

Variations

 

The lesson could be modified having a bilingual webquest which will facilitate the understanding to our students.

 

The lesson also might be carried out in a different situation, for example, followed by an oral presentation.

 

Resources Needed

 

In order to implement this lesson we will be using:

  • Classbooks: Conocimiento del Medio 3º - Anaya

  • Spanish-English Dictionaries

  • School web page with the Webquest link

  • Reference material in the classroom or in the school library

  • Resources they bring from home

  • Videos about the environment

 

We will use web resources as well as books to find the information:

 

- My school web page.

- The Know zone.

- Environmental Protection Agency (US).

- Smog City.

- Clean water program.

- Wikipedia.

- Water Education Foundation.

- DNR, Kids web.

- Planet Pals.

- Kids' Planet.

- Endangeres Species.

- Idaho Public Television.

 

It would be ideal if the Science and English teacher work together to support the activity while doing the computer search. Also Science and English teachers might coordinate to deal with the topic (lectures, lesson plan, etc).

 

Finally a field trip to "Las Marismas del Odiel" is designed in as a part of the lesson.
