"THERE
IS NO PLACE FOR RACISM IN ATHLETIC COMPETITION" In the 1936 Olympic Games Hitler hoped to prove his theory to the world that the German race is superior. At the opening ceremony, during his speech the I.O.C. president had to stop him because he understood that Hitler’s speech was completely irrelevant to the athletic spirit. The great hero of these Games was the Afro-American Jesse Owens who won four Olympic gold metals (100 m. and 200 m. running, 400 m. relay, long jump). His main opponent in the long jump was a German athlete and everybody believed that he would win. However Owens jumped 8.06 m. and everybody was astonished. Hitler himself left the stadium before the award ceremony. The German athlete who had athletic spirit accepted Owens superiority They both ran around together the stadium willing to show that love unites and racism has nothing to do with athletic competition. |
