* In the middle of Civil War, the 8th of February from 1937, it was 80 years ago when the troops of Franco with the support of the Italian army, entered by force into Málaga to occupy it and annex it to the National side. The same day, part of the population began their March towards Almería, fleeing from the tremendous repression that was going to take place. This March was done mostly on foot and by the road that linked Málaga with Almería by the Mediterranean coast. Along the way, numerous neighbours from different coastal towns were joining to this March, fleeing the existing dangers to their lives, which in many cases, led to death or exile.

This painful event is colloquially known as “La Desbandá” and it was silenced during the Franco regime. It has been in the last years when they have begun to study the existing documents in the Archives to glimpse their knowledge and spread it.

To help in the task of spreading the truth, the Provincial Historical Archive of Málaga organised an exposition in 2016 called “El éxodo de la carretera de Almería” (“The exodus of the Road to Almería”), based on the sample of documents referring to this event. It had the collaboration of other Archives which borrowed some of their documents, among them, the Historical Provincial Archive of Almería. This exposition was created with the aim of being itinerant and that this itinerancy will end in Almería as it was the initial destination of this March.

Since the massive departure of Málaga was initiated the 8th of February, and from that date, people from Málaga were arriving in Almería, we have chosen that day to open the exposition in this Historical Provincial Archive of Almería.
