Director of Award-winning debut film Mr Gay Syria, Turkish filmmaker Ayse Toprak tackles Turkish contemporary politics and youth movements in her new feature documentary THE OTHER HALF. With Turkish presidential elections on the horizon, the film will provide an in-depth and humanistic analysis of the country’s different political forces and alterna-tive perspectives with two characters that are brought together by their imagination for a better Turkey: Irem is a student in Istanbul who wants to make a change and who co-founded Universus, a group that aims to bring together young people from all walks of life in a politically divided Turkey. On the other side there is Ahmet, an investigative journalist covering injustices in Turkey since the early 1990s, who recently got elected to the Turkish parliament and became the pillar of justice.THE OTHER HALF is a German-Turkish coproduction with COIN FILM (GE) and Toprak Films (TR), currently in development and aiming to add a third European coproducer from Belgium where the filmmaker is now based part of the year. The financial structure will be comprised of partnerships with European broadcasters, film funds as well as a sales agent. In addition the team aims to work with international funds such as the Sundance Documentary Fund.Toprak’s first film, Mr Gay Syria, also coproduced by COIN FILM (GE) and Toprak Films (TR), was an immense distribution success with over 140 festivals, including 16 awards worldwide. Comprised of the same production teams from Germany and Turkey, distribution for THE OTHER HALF will follow a similar path with a long festival run to foster interest starting in 2021, followed by scheduled national theatrical releases, followed by broadcasts and an international VOD strategy connected to the media run up to Turkish presidential elections. |
