Born in Legazpi (Basque Country, Spain) he studied at the Higher Music Conservatory of San Sebastián and he graduated in Early Music as a countertenor at the Akademie voor Oude Muziek of Amsterdam, where he started his career as a singer. Meeting the choreographer Marcelo Evelin in Amsterdam during his production Muzot and the close artistic collaboration which would started from that moment, made him go on exploring the potential of the body as an instrument and expressive tool. After working, among others, with P.C. Scholten, Emio Greco, Arthur Rosenfeld and Lloyd Newson, he was invited in 1995 by Sasha Waltz to become a member of the company she founded in 1996, Sasha Waltz & Guests, as a dancer and performer but also as responsible for the musical direction and composer of several works. He was choreographic assistant of Sasha Waltz in Roméo et Juliette, premiered at the Opéra Bastille in Paris and staged at the Teatro all Scala in Milan or at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He was also Waltz’s assistant in Passion, an opera by Pascal Dusapin and in Sacre, on the Rite of Spring of Stravinsky, premiered in 2013 by the Kirov Ballet of Mariinsky in Saint Petersburg and staged as well at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris. He was at the same time dancer, director and artistic director of the project Jagden und Formen(Zustand 2008), with choreography and artistic concept by Sasha Waltz.
Fervent advocate and supporter of singular artistic collaborations, he invited his close collaborator Luc Dunberry, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet, to co-direct his project D’avant, with the collaboration, among others, of the Estévez Paños Company. With Romances, commissioned by the Bienal of Flamenco of Sevilla in 2012, he was awarded the Giraldillo Prize to the best direction.
