Finding shelter in mud nests or shuttered buildings, singing in colonies or praying in choirs—sparrows and cloistered nuns are, in some ways, birds of a feather, for both feel comfortable on high ground, close to heaven, though they are inevitably bound by the laws of the earthly, mortal plane. To the external observer, the abyss, of which both species are ever mindful, appears to be a great void, a yawning chasm where proper and common names have no meaning and ultimately disappear, giving rise to the unknown and even faith.

Under this pretext, the images we find here in the form of paintings can be seen as offerings associated with a space steeped in ritual, a temple. Flowers, which originally safeguarded relics and whose delicate perfume revealed the absence or mortality of the martyr, have become portraits in this case, working together as one great votive machine. A gift that seeks refuge in the dripping oil of the canvas, in the substance of the mud-like paint and in the spectator-cum-believer’s obligation to pass through them in order to witness the apparition of the pictorial image. All this forms a verdant imagery of life and death lifted straight from the annals of art history: paintings by Matisse, Albert York, Harman Steenwijck and others were the inspiration for this collection of pictures, which have no choice but to reverently offer themselves to the incorrupt body of Lady María Coronel.

The exhibition catalogue features an essay by Javier Díaz-Guardiola. The project´s master is Carlos Miranda.
