The Regional Government of Andalusia launched the INICIARTE programme in 2006 with the aim of boosting and supporting contemporary creativity and the culture industry in our region. After several years of successful activity, in 2013 these aims were revised to focus on young artists in Andalusia, giving them a leg up in the often-difficult transition from the world of academia to a professional career.

Public calls for proposals are issued each year to select promising exhibition projects by artists or researchers in the emerging visual arts. The winners are given the means to produce new works and the opportunity to present them in exhibition venues managed by the Regional Government of Andalusia, as well as a bilingual print catalogue tailored to each project, editorial and curatorial guidance, and all necessary technical resources.

The projects are selected by independent panels of experts drawn from every sphere of the contemporary art world: university lecturers, museum curators, freelance curators and critics, gallerists and members of visuals arts associations and collectives.

Since 2013, the programme has organised more than 75 exhibition projects and publications, promoted the work of over 120 young Andalusian artists, and helped to produce nearly 1.000 new works.

Today, the Iniciarte programme is a benchmark for the promotion of young artistic talent in Andalusia and Spain.

It is managed in accordance with the Code of Best Practices in the Visual Arts, approved by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and implemented by every organised contemporary art group and institution in Spain. Its management system is also subject to annual external audits for AENOR certification.

Additionally, Iniciarte runs an educational programme designed to help children learn about and develop an appreciation for contemporary art.
