GEOTOURISM

DESCRIPTION

Andalusia has an important geological heritage, counting on a great variety of geological areas and processes, many of them exceptional in the national and international context. These places of geological interest are listed in the Andalusian Inventory of Georecourses, with more than 662 georecourses.

The objective of this section is to present the most representative, singular or exclusive elements of the geological record of Andalusia. In general, these are places of high landscape interest or that show spectacular active processes that attract the attention of the public , which, in general, is not aware of the participation of geology in the configuration of those landscapes or the geological functioning of the processes you are observing in those places.

First of all, for geodiversity lovers, we suggest a visit to the three Unesco World Geoparks in Andalusia , about which you can find more information on this web portal:

- The Unesco Sierras Subbéticas World Geopark: This offers the visitor the opportunity to walk on the bottom of an ancient sea of warm and transparent waters from hundreds of millions of years ago, whose fauna has reached us today in form of fossils (ammonites). Sierras Subbéticas is the kingdom of ammonites and a worldwide reference. Likewise, the subsequent karstification of these rocks gave rise to a landscape of singular beauty, with sinkholes, lapiaces, poljes, canyons, waterfalls, fountains, springs and endless caves and underground galleries. Sierras Subbéticas is the kingdom of karst and ammonites.

- The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Unesco World Geopark: It is a geological gem with the best examples of underwater volcanism in the entire Western Mediterranean, the result of the clash between Africa and Europe millions of years ago. Not forgetting the fossil reefs.

- The Sierra Norte de Sevilla Unesco World Geopark: is a rich geological and mining heritage, with rocks of very old ages that show 700 million years of the Earth's history. Among the many places of geological interest in this territory, impressive rock formations produced by the action of the atmosphere and water stand out: karst, berrocales, waterfalls, gorges, canyons. It is worth highlighting the Cerro del Hierro.

Likewise, we propose a selection of geological trails in which their geological interpretation has been made, which will introduce you to the geology of the area.

On the other hand, we also propose a series of geotourism guides of natural spaces, which will undoubtedly facilitate know its rich and varied geological heritage.
