DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The Charco de la Boca trail begins in the front garden of the La Rocina Visitor Centre. It is about 3.8 kilometres long and is split into several neighbouring paths that allow you to decide on your route according to your interests.

At first approaching the rociera hut, pay attention to its construction, since it represents a way of life, which has now practically disappeared from the area, which used the resources available in the immediate environment as construction materials: eucalyptus, juniper or pine trunks and nut grass from the marsh. This same classification, which is especially suited to the area's climate, has been used in the observatories found along the path.

The route heads towards the bank of a stream running through a pine forest, under which you'll find a tapestry of herbaceous trees. The stone pine is a species whose appearance in the area has been documented since the 18th century and which today constitutes one of the most stereotypical landscapes of Doñana.

The first observatory looks out over the last stretch of the stream, where the channel becomes wide and shallow. At times when the area floods, countless birds flock to these waters.

La Rocina is an ideal breeding area for the common swamphen, little bittern or gray teal, but you may also spot other species that frequent this environment such as the Great Morito, Little Egret, Gray Heron or Purple Heron, among others.

The path then enters the Algaída del Carrizal; a branch of the stream covered with abundant vegetation. The walkway cuts through willows and reeds, offering a privileged view of the flooded areas.

Once the channel is crossed, the pine forest continues, occupying the entire route until reaching the second observatory on the stream. After this, you'll see the Algaida del Meloncillo, another pipe carrying water to the stream. On both banks the ground has been covered with a dense fern as a transition to the riparian vegetation that covers the riverbed. There are several examples of large cork oaks located very close to the water next to the willows. At this point, the path forks offering the option of continuing along the footbridge, or heading back into the pine forest.

This second walkway leads to a flat, open terrain, occupied by the white mountain, where the pines give way to a white Montpellier cistus roof accompanied by various aromatic plants such as rosemary, lavender or almoradux. In the nearby surroundings of the stream, the soil is more moist and rich, and ths causes the vegetation to diversify, meaning wild olive trees, kermes oak, mastic or palm hearts can appear.

Following the the path in the other direction, you will again enter the pine forest to end up, once more, in the Algaída del Carrizal, where the reeds dominate the view. Climbing species clash among them, thus supporting their long and flexible stems to search for areas of light; Ssarsaparillas, honeysuckle, bindweed and blackberries create a dense and intricate tangle.

When leaving the walkway, the path evolves along the stream, offering a panoramic view of the various plant formations that follow one another along its banks, from the furthest pine forests to the blanket of reeds and Montpellier cistus that sit in the middle of the channel, passing through cork oaks, ferns and willows, in a diverse array of layers, colours and shapes.
