SIGNPOSTED TRAIL

MOLINO MAREAL DE POZO DEL CAMINO

DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The hiking trail takes advantage of the route of the Huelva - Ayamonte railway line and which today is part of the Vías Verdes network of itineraries which use the old railway infrastructure. The hiking trail is a parallel route to the marsh complex formed at the mouth of the Carreras river and along it the user can see one of the last traditional salt plains in operation today in Andalusia and whose main product (flower of salt) is currently a highly valued element due to its gastronomic properties and its mineral composition.

Additionally, the path allows us to appreciate the effects of the tide in these low areas which are manifested in the succession of estuaries and drainage channels where different groups of birds proliferate and occupy the space as the tide level changes.

The second half of the path runs along a trench of the old railway and offers the chance to see the remains of the old infrastructure: retaining walls and masonry buttresses that blend in completely with the vegetation that covers the slopes of the land: pine trees, mulberry bushes, fig trees etc accompany the visitor along this stretch of the way.

The last metres of the hiking trail open up again to the marshland and lead us towards the old tide mill located at the end of the trail. The tide mills, which once spread along the entire coast, were a system for flour production taking advantage of the energy generated by the movement of the tides throughout the day. El Pozo del Camino and the nearby Molino del Pintado, are among the last mills of this type in the province. El Pozo del Camino being was the object of a museum rehabilitation and conditioning project a few years ago to house the "Man and the Marshland" information centre.
