With the concept that history is cyclical, Jonás alerts us that, although we are not completely aware of the current situation, this will not be the last crisis given that humans do not learn from the past. ‘El exiliado (The Exile), is a character who is forced to abandon his city, his family and friends in hopes of of finding a better future. ‘La costurera (The Seamstress) symbolises job insecurity, and how to move forward with the only tool available. ‘La extirpada' (The Uprooted) reflects the moods of a person who has lost their home, their memory and their refuge, such as anxiety, anger, rage, madness, and acceptance... With the video ‘Un hombre miserable 4.0 (The Miserable Man 4.0) he reproduces the daily life of a person who had everything and has lost it all, but to make fun of reality, every day he recreates the routine that he was used to having, and thus, bit by bit, he abandons himself until he becomes aware of the pure reality.

A photographer, almost out of necessity, the artist uses his camera as a means of expression to speak without words. And, as such, in each project he has used different systems to adapt to each story, such as colour tones, the setting, scenarios, etc., which he represents in series of seven photographs in order for each photographic project to be visualised in the form of a film, since his photographs are loaded with narrative connecting one with another. A photographer since he started out and subsequently a filmmaker, Jonás Torres cannot stop himself from combining his two passions, creating stories with his photo camera. His final intention is to open up a gap in the mind of the spectator, and not to leave them indifferent.

The catalogue accompanying the exhibition contains the text by Natalia Vearr ‘Mudo muestro mis imágenes (Silent, I show my images).

Jonás Torres

Sevilla, 1983

Jonás started his adventure in the world of photography at a very young age, holding on to any small camera within his reach. As he grew, so did his interest for taking pictures of people and everything around him. Then came some conferences and his first exhibition at the age of 16 in “Sala La Imperdible” with the theme “Antimoda”, where one can already see the influences and tastes which are still present in his photography. In 2001 he started a distance course in photography and in 2004 he began studies in the Cinematography School of Andalusia (Escuela Andaluza de Cinematografía - AEC), where he perfected the cinematographic style he would use for his own stories. His time in the Cinematography School of Andalusia served as a doorway into the audio-visual world. In that same company, he continued to further his professional career by taking every opportunity that came his way and opening every door he found, becoming not only a video technician, but also a designer and editor of video.

With La Cajonera Cultural (a project in which Jonás is actively involved as creative director and co-founder together with Natalia Vearr), Jonás started a new stage in his life, once more combining his interest for art by taking the lead in designing the posters, and complementing it with various important individual and collective exhibitions in spaces such as: La Galería Roja, creative space Galería El Pasaje, or the creative space H, and sporadic collaboration with different online publications such as F-Stop, and working with the photographer Elisa Muñiz who he accompanies in the capacity of photographer’s assistant.
