Midnight after the Desert is situated at the convergence of two intensities, two images on a collision course: the figure of the cactus and ornament, united by their hallucinatory potential. The cactus refers to altered states of consciousness, a direct allusion to the hallucinogenic mescaline found in several species of cacti. This plant close to the mineral and inorganic exists in the land of the living but, at the same time, is linked to the metaphysics of the dead, the realm of fossils, mummies or stones.

Ornament, on the other hand, symbolises a catharsis of the eye. A system of modular compression and fractal construction of the image, ornament manages to reveal perception itself, made visible through plastic ornamental rhythm (repetition, variation, alteration, structure, development). In this project, midnight is a state of mind similar to place and time, the kairós of apparitions. It is the state that happens to the desert, a desert whose vastness falls back on time, on an empty time just before midnight which, like the shifting sands, offers no assurance of stability. In that mental state, the lysergic meets dehiscence: the fruit splits open to release its seed, or the tissues of a healing wound pull apart, creating a psychological crevice from which the image of the cactus emerges.

The exhibition catalogue features an essay by Javier Sánchez Martínez and Gabriel Cabello.

The project’s master is Gabriel Cabello.

A guided tour of the exhibition will be held shortly and the catalog will be presented.
