ARBORETO DEL VILLAR - Ventana del Visitante
The Arboreto del Villar path offers the visitor the opportunity to enter a peculiar landscape, very different from most of the spaces in which the facilities for public use in the province of Huelva are located.
As its name indicates, the Arboretum of El Villar is an area that extends around 75 ha, organised into 90 plots destined to house different species of the genus Eucalyptus, as test plots in which monitoring and evaluation of the viability of each one of the implanted species, in order to verify their potential use in the reforestation programmes carried out throughout the decades of the 40s, 50s and 60s of the last century.
This Arboretum together with those located in El Acebuche; Los Cabezudos and El Loro were part of a network of forestry testing centres that were in operation until the early 1970s, El Villar being the only one that has been maintained in its entirety, which makes it an element of great value from an educational, historical and botanical standpoint.
The path runs through most of the botanical area, complete with numerous paths that bring the visitor closer to the different plots and allow access from one to the other. In the plots of up to 48 different species are represented together with some hybrids produced between some of them.
Apart from the botanical and historical value of the place, the presence of species with unique features due to the colour of their trunks (E. diversicolour); by their size (E.grandis); by the smell that their leaves give off (E.citriodora); by the cork aspect of their bark (E. sideroxylon); by the colour of their flowers (E. ficifolia), etc. They surprise the visitor who does not expect to find such diversity.
The path is perfectly signposted, the different existing species are identified as well as their corresponding features and peculiarities.
As complementary elements, the hiking trail has a parking area, a small picnic area and a small room where various information panels are displayed on the history of the Arboretum, the species featured and the role of the eucalyptus as a forest genus widely spread in our territory. .
