SIGNPOSTED TRAIL

DUNA DE BOLONIA

DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

Along the beach of Bolonia, this path allows us to feel the sea, as well as see the sands of the dunes moving through the cove, moved by the wind. The hiking trail begins on a wooden footbridge of about four hundred metres in length, from which we can make out the Dune of Bolonia up aheadNatural Monument, the Bolonia Dune Natural Monument, where we are headed.

As you pass along the beach, the route runs to the lower boundary of the Roman ruins of Bolonia (which constitutes the archaeological site of Baelo Claudia), where you can see the old fish salting factory where the Romans made the famous garum sauce. The left of the path is bordered by the typical lagoons of the beaches of Tarifa. In these pools formed in the sand of the beach by the effect of the rising tides, there is considerable bird fauna, notably, turnstones, dunlins, common redshanks and seagulls. During this route, the vegetation mainly comprises marram grass, thistles and sea lilies.

Once at the well, where the stretch on the sands ends, specimens of junipers accompany the marram grass, lilies and sea thistles. A few steps later and after passing a small patch of gorse, the path enters the pine forest and ascends slightly parallel to the dune front. Almost at the foot of the Bolonia Dune, the path leaves the pine forest to open up again on the beach, where the walk ends. From here, the views of the Dune are impressive.
