EL ALJIBE - Ventana del Visitante
The botanical garden is located in the central massif of the Sierra Nevada Protected Area at about 1,900 metres altitude and displays the flora and vegetation of this area and the Alpujarra mountainside, as well as those of Los Filabres, Lújar-La Contraviesa and Gádor (Nevadense and Alpujarreño-Gadorense Biogeographic Sectors) that are home to the biggest collection of flowers in Andalusia with numerous rare and exclusive (endemic) species. Unfortunately, some of these species are threatened and, consequently, protected by our legislation.
This botanical garden is divided into four large units: the Silicicultural Vegetation Unit; the Calcicolous Vegetation Unit; Riverside Vegetation and the Garden of Threatened Species. The first three collect plant formations while the last is ordered by collections of species grouped by their ecology.
At the following link you can consult the plant of the month, a file that describes a significant species chosen for its conservation status, the cultural values developed around it and some interesting facts relating to its how it survives, its habitat, adaptation etc.
