The El Fraile viewpoint, located in front of the Los Llanos recreational area, offers impressive views of the Sierra Nevada massif, halfway between the Sierra and the Vega de Granada. At the bottom of the ravine you can see the town of Monachil, with one of the largest municipalities in this mountain range. From El Veleta peak to Vega de Granada, it stretches along both banks of the Monachil River, which descends between oaks and holm oaks from the very peaks of Sierra Nevada. Later, it will be encased by limestone walls as it passes through the Los Cahorros gorge. Finally, you will pass through the picturesque town of the same name before its mouth in the Genil. The hill of the Cañada Real del Camino de los Neveros stands out above it, a legendary access road to the peaks of the mountain range whose use in the past was to transport snow to Granada.
The viewpoint suggests other interesting views such as the Cerro de Huenes, a huge limestone promontory covered with a dense pine forest for reforestation. Of soft relief, it contrasts with the rugged orography of other nearby peaks such as Trevenque or Los Alayos. Surrounding this hill runs the Arroyo de Huenes, which later flows into the aforementioned Monachil river.
Finally, it is also worth highlighting the magnificent panoramic view of the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park that, from this point, can be seen, with its white villages of Nívar, Alfacar or Víznar.
From the A-44 motorway, Bailén-Motril, taking exit 135 Ronda Sur-Alhambra-Sierra Nevada. Continue on the A-395 until you take exit 2 for Vergeles-La Zubia. After this sign you will access the local road GR-3202 that leads to Monachil. To access the viewpoint, take the track that connects Colinas Bermejas with Cumbres Verdes, past the Neighbourhood of Barrio de Monachil and before reaching Monachil.
