EL GUARDA FORESTAL

DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

From the northern limit of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, this wonderful panoramic view lets you take in a large area with strong contrasts and extraordinary beauty.

The light tones of the mountains reveal their limestone nature, which usually presents a steep relief and numerous shelters. This, together with the fact that Sierra de las Nieves was a natural and obligatory passage between Ronda and Málaga, explains why it became a haven for bandits. Until 1934, it was the operational territory of the last Andalusian bandit, Juan José Mingolla, known as Pasos Largos.

Lighter still are the gleaming houses of El Burgo, a mountain town of Muslim origin, sprinkled with remains of walls and towers. The river Turón, with its exuberant riverside vegetation, is encased like a deep and meandering scar, in this landscape.

The Sierra de las Nieves mountain range is the head of four important basins running into the Mediterranean and feeding the nearby reservoirs. Its slopes are home to valuable masses of Spanish fir, such as Cubero and Ronda, pine forests such as Junquera, and holm and cork oak groves.
