EL TAPADERO - Ventana del Visitante
At this point an impressive panoramic view of the Sierra de Las Villas unfolds. The olive grove occupies the softest slopes in the region, taking advantage of the best soil conditions. Only rocky or very steep outcrops are left free from exploitation. Human presence is also relegated to the lower areas, where the soil is fertile soil or can be used for agriculture or livestock. The remains of terraces and associated constructions can still be made out.
While the steep limestone slopes have rows of repopulated pines, the most inaccessible areas constitute the last stronghold of the original Mediterranean forest. To anchor their roots, the plants utilise cracks and ledges in the rocks and all those parts where some sediment accumulates.
The vertical walls serve as a shelter and breeding ground for the so-called rupicolous birds, birds of prey being the most emblematic of these. It is worth admiring the flight of vultures and Egyptian vultures ascending with the currents of hot air from the bottom of the valley.
