DESCRIPTION


BIVOUAC SHELTER: no security and open all year round. Located at 3,050 m altitude

Places: 16.

Management: The Sierra Nevada National Park.

Nearest shelters: Poqueira

Activities from the refuge: Ascents to Mulhacen and Puntal de la Caldera. Winter climbs to the north of Mulhacen and north of Puntal de la Caldera. Support shelter for the Veleta-Mulhacén crossing and the Integral de Sierra Nevada.

Coordinates: UTM-ETRS89, 30S x = 470967 y = 4101004

Cartography: IGN 1: 25,000, sheets 1027-IV TREVÉLEZ, 1042-II BÉRCHULES, 1042-I LANJARÓN.

Observations:

* You do not need permission from the Park to stay overnight at the refuge.
* Dogs are not allowed.
* In summer, you can get water from the Caldera lagoon (water purifying filter or tablets recommended).
In winter it comes from the snow melting.
* There is no waste collection service. Those using the shelter must take their own rubbish with them.

HOW TO GET

Take the old Sierra Nevada road, GR-411, towards the La Hoya del Portillo barrier preventing cars from going any further, which is located about 11 kilometres from Capileira. You'll have to leave your vehicle here and continue on foot for approximately 4 hours in the snow (difficult conditions), or 3 hours on a route with no snow.
Access from other shelters:
Access 1. From the Poqueira refuge through the bottom of the Mulhacen river valley (1 hour 30 minutes).
Access 2. By car from Capileira to Hoya del Portillo (30 minutes). From there, walk along the PR-A 26 Hoya del Portillo-Refugio Poqueira trail to Puerto Molina (30 minutes). From Puerto Molina, head along the old road that used to cross the mountains to get to the refuge (2 hours 30 minutes in summer).
Access 3. In summer, from Capileira on the SIAC minibus to Chorrillo (1 hour) and from there along the old road that used to cross the mountains to get to the refuge (1 hour, 15 minutes).
