DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The route proposed here leads us along an old Roman road to the top of the medieval fortress of Castellar de la Frontera, and its archaeological site, there are continuous wide views over the wild nature between valleys and cork oak forests that marked the history of these lands.

It is a small part of a great international hiking trail, the GR-7, which starts in Tarifa and reaches the Greek Peloponnese.

The hiking trail begins on a well-preserved cobbled path, probably a Roman road built upon a previously existing trail. Among the vegetation that accompanies you on the ascent, you can see rockrose, heather, lavender, mastics, fan palms and cork oaks. Along the entire route you can enjoy unbeatable views of the area, which include part of the Campo de Gibraltar municipality, the New Town of Castellar and the coast.

The path continues towards the medieval fortress of Castellar that has been around since as long ago as the 10th century, being one of the few examples of medieval fortification that has remained inhabited to this day. At the end of the hiking trail there is a small circular route on which you can visit some anthropomorphic tombs.
