VIEWPOINT

LA CALZADA

DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

From these very walls and battlements, the castle's defenders guarded the entrance of the enemy on the coast, given that on clear days with cold winds from the north, even the raised silhouette of the Yebel-Musa, on the African coast, can be made out.

In the Middle Ages, this was an area of battles and conquests. Many towns testify to this past with the name of border (frontera), such as Jimena or Castellar. Numerous fortresses are still preserved in Tarifa, Tavizna, Medina Sidonia, Gaucín, Casares.

In terms of vegetation, we can see slopes conquered by the Mediterranean scrubland, capable of withstanding the weather conditions and the lack of richness of the soils in this area. Specifically, the mountain that includes the viewpoint is called Dehesa Boyal, since in the past its meadows were used to feed livestock.

About 8 kilometres from the castle, is located Pueblo Nuevo de Castellar, built at the end of the 60s. The castle was then practically depopulated, but little by little some houses are being recovered.
