DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The Laguna de las Madres, together with the Primera de Palos, Jara and Mujer lagoons, forms the Lagunas de Palos y las Madres Natural Area. This area, located about 5 metres above sea level and surrounded by farmland, constitutes an intermediary area between the ecosystems of La Doñana and Las Marismas del Tinto and del Odiel, sharing many of its most characteristic species with these two spaces such as: Squacco herons, cattle egrets, bitterns, shovelers, red-crested pochards, mallards, gray herons, purple herons, tufted ducks, spoonbills, little grebes, cormorants, purple swamphen, common coots, as well as other more rare and difficult to see such as: otters, white-headed ducks and crested coots.

The hiking trail is a linear route that starts in the Moguer pine forest following a mountain service track. The pine forest is part of the municipal public forest "Ordenados de Moguer" and constitutes the main regulating element of the hydrological flow that feeds the lagoon. After going through this first section, we immediately find ourselves before an open landscape in which the old pine forest has been replaced by modern intensive crops of red fruits under plastic that obtain part of their water needs from the direct exploitation of the aquifer.

As we move forward, the pool of water of the lagoon opens its way into the landscape and in doing so the presence of the typical species of the perilagunar border becomes more evident, such as poplars, African tamarisk, reeds, cattails and rushes. Over the past decades, the basin of the lagoon was used for the extraction of the peat formed as a result of the deposit of plant material under conditions of stagnation and oxygen shortage. For a long time, peat was an important energy source due to the calorific power generated by its combustion.
