DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

This trail is arranged in consecutive circuits that negotiate the canals with footbridges. Several linear branches lead to observatories for watching animals.

The Huerto and Las Pajas lagoons, along with other small temporary lagoons, make up a complex of which the Acebuche lagoon is also part. This lagoon complex originates from the outcrop of groundwater, since the water table is practically at surface level in this area.

In these flooded areas, various characteristic plant formations are arranged in strips, colonising the waters from the banks, and entering some of the canals that connect the lagoons. The flora is highly dependent on the level of waterlogging and, therefore, with changes greatly with the seasons. It includes species such as bulrush, saltmarsh bulrush, cattails, ranunculus, couch grass and cogon grass.

The hiking trail runs solely through the preserves with a system formed by thick bushes which are heterogeneous in composition in which small groups of stone pine rise up among scatterings of junipers. The preserves present differences in the composition of their vegetation depending on their proximity to the water table:

- The Monte Negro colonises areas with very wet soils, where the water table is almost on the surface and, therefore, surrounds the flooded areas. It is a dark and dense thicket dominated by broom heather, usually accompanied by heather and gorse.

- anthyllis cytisoides is found in the driest and highest areas. The thicket is dominated by white Montpellier cistus accompanied by cistus clusii, broom and cistus salviifolius, among others.

Other Mediterranean species which appear in the most exposed areas include lavender, rosemary and thymus albicans.

The preserves are an ideal habitat for small and large mammals. Although they are quite elusive, it is not difficult for you to find the tracks of deer, wild boars, mongooses, foxes and badgers, or perhaps you will spot them in the dense thicket. The small pine groves also offer ideal nesting areas for a number of species such as the red kite, the booted eagle, the common kestrel and the azure-winged magpie.
