PINAR DE CANAVAS - Ventana del Visitante
El Pinar de Cánava is an interesting forest ecosystem made up of predominantly Aleppo pines. The unique nature of this pine forest of around 120 trees, lies in its unspoilt environment and its age, with pine trees of between 100 and 250 years.
This pine forest is of great educational value as it offers a unique insight into the stages of ageing of a forest. On top of this, you can see a pine forest in its old age. In contrast to the typical form of young pine forests with their straight trunks and conical crowns, the specimens in found in this Natural Monument are twisted, and their rounded canopies, much like parasols, are similar instead to other tree species. The scrubland in this forest has virtually disappeared. Forests tend to naturally have it, but mankind has played its part in modifying it.
There are beautiful panoramic views of Sierra Mágina from this monument, as well as some of the neighbouring villages. Jimena is one of them, surrounded by olive groves, just two kilometres away. Naturally, it produces quality Denomination of Origin olive oil and has receiving a number of awards and certification. It also stands out for it crafts such as lead soldiers and basketry, which are making a comeback and are popular with collectors.
