The Poqueira ravine, suitable all year round, is located at the foot of the highest peaks in the Peninsula, and contains one of the most surprising landscapes of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park making it a must-see for anyone who wants to get to know the Alpujarra.
This hiking trail runs through three of the towns that have best known how to preserve their traditional Moorish architecture, Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira, declared Historic Artistic Complexes in 1982. The trail also allows you to discover the customs and uses made by the inhabitants of this region.
The beginning of the hiking trail is in the highest pooint of the town of Pampaneira, above the threshing floor, coinciding in this first section with the GR -7 trail. We will ascend towards Bubión on a path between terraces, irrigation canals, pools, chestnut trees and some remaining holm oaks, opposite, at the top we have Veleta, the second highest peak in the mountains. In a constant climb of around forty minutes at a slow pace, we will reach the lower part of the next town, Bubión, which we enter by the Hondera fountain very close to the church.
We cross the town at its lowest part and above the sports centre we continue to the next destination, Capileira. This path is similar to the previous one, terraces, stone walls, chestnut trees and some beautiful waterfalls coming from the irrigation canals. The path zigzags when it reaches a rural tourism company, then continues under the road towards the town. At this point, we pass through the door of the museum of arts and popular customs, continuing through the lower part of the town and taking the path that goes down to the Poqueira River, which we will cross over on the Chíscar bridge.
Once we have crossed the river, we will first continue on a gentle ascent and then continue on a flat on the right side of the river. Downstream, walking through an oak grove, we will cross several ravines and a cattle fence where we must leave the gate closed. At one point, looking back, you can see the imposing Mulhacen, the highest peak in the Sierra Nevada and the Iberian Peninsula. A little further on, the path begins to descend more steeply, reaching the river again at the Molino bridge. Crossing the bridge, along a steep path that runs partly between cypress trees, we will arrive again at Bubión.
The road back to Pampaneira is the same that we took on the way up, but now the perspective is different, facing the Sierra de Lújar and the Mediterranean Sea.
