RUTA DE LOS MOLINOS - Ventana del Visitante
The hiking trail follows a livestock trail, Vereda Patriste - Jimena, which, as its name suggests, connects Alcalá de los Gazules with Jimena de la Frontera. It is an authentic walk along a route that has seen a continuous flow of people and beasts of burden including charcoal makers, cork workers, cattle breeders and, above all, mill artisans; reason enough to do this hiking trail.
A number of mills that took advantage of the water courses of these mountains remain standing today and an information panel at the start of the hiking trail explains the operation of these mills. The abundance of streams led to an intense development of the milling industry, of which we will find numerous vestiges in the form of irrigation canals, millstones and mills in some places, this forced the creation of paths and lanes that today we can enjoy being in touch with nature and history simultaneously. The road runs generally on a level and parallel to the Rocinejo river and the "cao" (the channel) which supplied water to the mills.
The presence of a large herd of cattle makes the griffon vulture among the most characteristic of the Los Alcornocales Natural Park. Its spiral flight, with its legs extended, is the signal with which it announces to the other vultures the location of a corpse, a carrion that will be devoured in a short time.
