SIERRA DE LA SAGRA

DESCRIPTION

The Sierra de la Sagra Special Area of Conservation is located between the Granada municipalities of Huéscar, Puebla de Don Fabrique and Castril.

The vegetation is mostly made up of holm oaks, oak trees, maple trees, high mountain pine forests, and grassland. In the past, the holm oak covered most of the terrain, to as high as 1600 metres. However, nowadays, holm oaks are only found in the mountain areas. The Portuguese oak is the most prominent tree in this area.
Native pine forests are found in the summits of Sierra Seca, La Sagra and Guillimona, at 1600-1700 metres. The black pine dominates, alongside juniper, among others. These high mountain pine forests are home to special species of threatened flora such as the Andalusian belladonna wildflower and the bird´s-nest orchid.

There are a large number of interesting fauna species. It is being considered as a potential conservation area for its indigenous crayfish, as well as numerous insects of interest, among the most relevant being the marsh frillary and Spanish moon moth. Equally, a multitude of fascinating birds such as the Egyptian vulture can be seen in flight.

Among the amphibians, you may see the indigenous Betic midwife toad and Spanish painted frog. And with regards to the reptile family, the Valverde lizard is particularly treasured. The following species of bats are also found: long-fingered bat, common bent-wing bat, Mediterranean horseshoe bat, and large horseshoe bat, among others.
