The Tufillo Bunker Special Area of Conservation is one of many areas in Cadiz that has become a part of the European ecological network, Natura 2000, due to its role in the conservation of cave-dwelling bats. It consists of an old abandoned military fortification which is set on large, privately owned farmland in Tarifa.
It is home to an important colony of lesser mouse-eared bats; a particularly delicate species, especially during breeding and hibernation periods. They have a low reproductive rate, yet are remarkably long-living, so repopulation is slow. Furthermore, they are highly gregarious, which makes them even more vulnerable. The importance of their conservation in Andalusia is due, not only to their vulnerability, but also to the fact that they are one of the most significant populations in Europe, both in terms of quantity and diversity. There is also data to suggest that the greater mouse-eared bat, common bent-wing bat and greater horseshoe bat are present here, though sporadically and on a much lesser scale.
