PEÑON DE ZAFRAMAGON - Ventana del Visitante

This amazing geographical formation stands between the Seville and Cadiz countryside. The best way to get there is on foot, by bike or on horseback, along the greenway (via verde) that runs between the villages of Olvera and Coripe.
The scenery of the rock is enriched by the Guadalporcún River, which runs alongside it carving out a deep canyon at its base, which is known as El Estrechón. Along the course of the river, pools, giant´s kettles and small waterfalls have formed. Here you can try an easy canyoning descent, and, in some parts of the nearby Guadalmanil river, fish for barbel and carp.
This rocky area, despite seeming almost bare, is actually an island of indigenous vegetation that is home to swathes of unique flora. Besides areas of holm oaks and wild olive trees that cover the lower areas, the most abundant plants are riverine vegetation and rupiculous plants, which cling to the canyon walls and steep slopes of the crag. There is also Mediterranean scrub with mastic, rosemary and rockrose, as well as juniper. The goats feed on it, sharing the space with cattle and olive and cereal crops, which are the main economic provider for the area, as well as small game.
Its most important role is as an area for birdlife, given that the largest colony of griffon vultures in Andalusia, and one of the largest in Spain, nests here, in an enclave of hardly half a kilometre. For this reason, it was declared a Special Protection Area for birds in 2002. Other threatened species of birds of prey such as the Egyptian vulture, Bonelli´s eagle, common hawk and Eurasian eagle owl, reside here. Lesser common are the crag martin, Theklar´s lark, black wheatear, blue rock thrush, and corvidae such as jackdaws, red-billed choughs and ravens.
The rural architecture of the area can be seen at the Caserío de Zaframagón, of both ethnographic and landscape interest. The nearby historical-artistic complex of Olvera with its Medieval Fortress, Church of Encarnación, House of “La Cilla” and the Convent of Caños Santos, are worth visiting.
