CUEVA DE AMBROSIO - Ventana del Visitante
The Cueva de Ambrosio Natural Monument is a Paleolithic site that houses a set of cave paintings. It is considered one of the most important Paleolithic sites in Andalusia and is located in an area dominated by important karst formations. This combination of high cultural and natural value has led to its declaration as a natural monument of an eco-cultural nature.
The Ambrosio cave is located in an area of great peculiarity in the Velez region, at the head of the Moral stream. This cave is about 39 metres wide by 18 metres high and the deepest area measures about 17 metres.
In the group of paintings that can be seen in the caves, widely scattered lines are generally distinguished, so the visitor must make some effort, joining lines and lines to reconstruct the forms. The painting considered most spectacular, and the one chosen by many, is undoubtedly that of a red ochre horse that stands out perfectly from the rest.
The set of all this Parietal Art presents characteristics different from those that appear in the rock art of the North of the Iberian Peninsula, which has led to its declaration as an Cultural Property by the state and as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO together with other shelters and caves of the Mediterranean arch.
