LA LAGUNA DEL MORAL - Ventana del Visitante
There are several seasonal lagoons in the Los Alcornocales Natural Park that collect the abundant waters from autumn to spring. The Laguna del Moral, which was once shaded by an immense black mulberry tree, will surprise us because of its unique location since it is located within the dense forest under imposing Valencian oaks and cork oaks. The place is overwhelmingly beautiful, peaceful and tranquil, with abundant shade and the sounds of an intensely populated forest. The lagoon serves as a habitat for newts and frogs, who celebrate the arrival of the rains and, with them, the water that will gradually be lost with the arrival of summer.
After this humid area, we will continue our way for a section walking among old Valencian oaks of great size, silent witnesses of the many historical events that have occurred under their watch over the decades.
In the village of La Sauceda, known as long ago as the Reconquest, we will see typical cabins called "moriscos", the remains of the hermitage of La Sauceda as well as those of the Mondo flour mill, all of them that commemorate past centuries. Afterwards, the path enters one of the best conserved cork oak groves on the peninsula, furrowed in turn by the course of the Rosada Llana or Pasadallana stream, where we see an example of a riverside forest dotted with Valencian oaks. This is home to mammals such as roe deer, deer, wild pigs, foxes, genets, martens and many more, as well as a large number of amphibians, reptiles, birds and invertebrates.
Please respect the mountains so that our passage through it is compatible with the survival of the fauna and flora that live here. On certain days with hunting activities (such as selective hunting) the trail may be temporarily closed to guarantee the safety of visitors, so we recommend that you check in advance by calling the Natural Park office in Alcalá de los Gazules ( telephones 856 587 508 or 671 537 208). Located 4.7 kilometres from the Port of Gáliz, following the CA-8201 road towards Jimena de la Frontera and just before the curve of La Sauceda. The path begins on the right-hand side, taking the crossroads of the track to the forest house and which appears flanked by two separate stone walls on both sides and with a metal gate that you can normally pass through, all between kilometres 24 and 25 of the CA-8201 road.
