CABO DE GATA-NIJAR - Ventana del Visitante

Nature
The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Biosphere Reserve is a sub-desert, steppe and marine volcanic complex and has been included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves for its unique physical and natural conditions in the European continent.
Its landscapes are dominated by shrub communities of jujube, Mediterranean dwarf palm and Periploca laevigata, and by scrubland grasslands where esparto grass and winter thyme take centre stage. Reptiles such as the ocellated lizard and the Greek tortoise are found in fascinating
Human activity
The inhabitants of the area lands have adapted to the complex environment, creating a traditional system of use of natural resources based around fishing, livestock, agriculture and plants for materials, such as esparto.
The mining, salt flats and Phoenician fishing industries have been present for centuries, but have modernised and improved traditional procedures in recent years, making the area ever more appealing for tourism.
Culture
There is plenty of evidence of Almeria´s cultural heritage. For example, the use of natural resources in a rather adverse environment is ingenious: water irrigation channels, mills, water wheels and wells are still standing.
Other points of interest are the castles of San Andrés and San Juan de los Terreros, in Carboneras and Pulpí, respectively; and the castles of Los Escullos and San Pedro, in Níjar. Also recommended are La Casa de los Volcanes Ecomuseum Geotourism Centre in Rodalquilar, and the Torre (Tower) de Mesa Roldán in Carboneras.

Without a doubt, one of the most popular activities in the Sierra de Grazalema is hiking. The natural park has about twenty routes, all of which show off the natural and cultural diversity of this protected area. Two particularly good routes are the signposted trail of Llanos de Líbar, which covers 19 kilometres of this striking landscape, and that of El Pinsapar, which traverses through amazingly preserved fir forests.
Water sports are available in the area: a canoe trip in the Zahara de la Sierra reservoir, for example, gliding under the watchful eye of an imposing rock face.
Another option is to explore the deepest depths of the earth, taking in the magnificent crevices formed by the action of water in this limestone landscape. Caving in the Cueva de Gato * or in the Hundidero * is also an unforgettable experience, where you will encounter stalactites, stalagmites and all kinds of underground formations. Canyoning too, is an excellent activity available here, involving thrilling descents down riverbeds. One of the best places to undertake this adventure is in the Garganta Verde *, where you will marvel at fascinating landscapes from an unbeatable perspective.
(*) Activities that require authorisation from the Natural Park.
This natural protected area is affiliated with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism , whose associated projects can be found by clicking here .
