VIEWPOINT

PUNTA DE LOS MUERTOS

DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

This panoramic view shows the splendor of the coastal landscape, with its mountains, cliffs and, of course, the beach, one of the largest in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.

The name Punta de los Muertos refers to the emergence of those who died in shipwrecks and were dragged here by the prevailing currents. The dark volcanic material at the tip made the show even more gloomy.

These volcanic materials, which are 9 to 16 million years old, contrast with the exceptional white sand of the beach and the rocks going from the viewpoint to the Carboneras Thermal Power Plant. These are sediments that were once under the sea and the remains of mollusks, algae and other organisms mixed together. For this reason, they are called bioclastic sands.

The famous beach, a cove with transparent turquoise waters, marks its entrance with two volcanic masses detached from the cliffs. Regarding the name of Carboneras, it comes from charcoal, a trade practiced since ancient times and which led to the disappearance of the native forest.
