DESCRIPTION

The Cascada de la Cimbarra Natural Park is just a few kilometres from Despeñaperros Natural Park, in the vicinity of the town of Aldeaquemada.

It is a picturesque area with rugged reliefs, where the narrowing of the Guarrizas river forms a succession of waterfalls. The most beautiful and spectacular waterfall is the Cimbarra, the name by which the locals refer to the waterfalls. It has an exposed vertical face, formed by rocky strata that are very resistant to erosion. This rock is called Armorican quartzite and can also be seen in other parts of the area. Sometimes it is possible to see fossil remains or the spectacular ripple marks caused by the waves on these rocks. These marks prove the marine origin of these rocks, dating back 500 million years.

Other waterfalls well-known for their beauty, are Cimbarrillo, in the Martín Pérez stream, and María Antonia, in the Cimbarrilla stream.

In addition to its waterfalls, this natural area is characterised by its diverse vegetation. Holm and cork oak groves abound in thick Mediterranean scrubland. The reforestation, featuring stone pines and black pines, and the dense riverside forests give the area a pleasant aroma. Right down in the ravines, amongst the crevices, plants such as the rustyback fern grow; a type of fern that gets its name from the golden colour found on the reverse of its leaves. These landscapes are home to many animals, among which the most notable are predators such as foxes and genets; birds such as the golden eagle, Bonelli´s eagle and the Eurasian eagle owl; and otters that reside in the river beds.

This protected area also stands out for its important cultural heritage, due to a number of important prehistoric remains having been discovered. Very important examples of rock paintings have been found in La Tabla de Pochico, up on the hill of Cimbarra, and Monuera and Desesperada, leading to their declaration as World Heritage sites by UNESCO.
