DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

The El Portil lagoon is one of the most representative coastal wetlands in Huelva and is found in the best state of conservation, hosting a community of fish of great interest.

This is a practically circular route around Laguna del Portil. It begins at the viewpoint located next to the HV-4112 coastal road from where it penetrates the pine forest that surrounds the lagoon.

The first part of the hiking trail sits on the chain of dunes that act as a natural plug at the mouth of the drainage network into the sea. It is a sandy area which is very fragile and difficult for pedestrians to cross, so this first section has a wooden decking pathway that prevents continuous trampling and facilitates the crossing of users. The decking follows a winding path ascending to the top of the dune crest and then descending to the level of the lagoon.

From this point, the path coincides with the perimeter road, with the perimeter fence of the Laguna del Poritl Nature Reserve on your left. From an interpretive point of view, the path takes us into a typically coastal ecosystem dominated by the canopy of stone pines that are home to a diverse Mediterranean undergrowth composed of numerous specimens of mastics, myrtles, broom, junipers and fan palms.

There are also many prickly pears (Opuntia ficus indica), considered an invasive exotic species and on which different steps have been taken to reduce their presence in the area.

The route will allow us to enjoy magnificent views of the lagoon at certain points, and the pool of water is bordered by characteristic vegetation including of cattails, rushes, reeds and nut grass. This vegetation serves as a refuge for numerous aquatic birds, and it is common to see coots, ducks, Great crested grebes, grebes, moorhens and seagulls.
