SIGNPOSTED TRAIL

LA SABINA

DATA OF INTEREST
DESCRIPTION

This trail of high landscape value starts from the vicinity of the Cortijada del Mojonar (Chirivel) and its route offers the chance to see three species of juniper in the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park : Phoenician, Spanish and savin juniper.

The Las Sabinas viewpoint is reached via an ascent parallel to the Sierra ravine, and is a good place to stop along the way to rest and take in the wonderful views of the Chirivel corridor (historical passageway between the Levant and Andalusia), with the Sierra de las Estancias and Filabres featuring in the background. There are many vestiges that indicate the passage of man through this corridor, stretching back more than 5,000 years. The axis of the corridor is the Rambla de Chiribel. In terms of geology, there is a mixture of materials from different periods, which have in turn given rise to soils of good quality from a cultivation point of view.

Further along the path the Sabina Albar Natural Monument appears, which is unique on account of its size and age; more than 600 years old. The descent of the trail starts parallel to the Molina ravine and ends on the trail to Puerto de Chirivel.
