IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

As a preventive measure to avoid the spread of COVID_19, this path must be taken in the direction indicated on the start sign.

WARNING:

Signposted path exclusively for pedestrian use, cycling is not allowed.

The esplanade that we find at the beginning of the path will serve as a car park, with an old fountain that has been restored. The plants we can observe, as in other points of the old National IV, is not what we would expect to find in a place like this. This is the result of a landscaping project in the Despeñaperros Natural Park in the 1950s, and which introduced exotic species such as cypresses and cedars, which today provide us with one more contrast to enjoy.

The first 1,000 metres of the trail are steep and uphill, until reaching a somewhat flatter area. It is here where the hiking trail continues along a path, which we must follow for about 500 metres until we are forced to leave it in an easterly direction, twhere it joins the Barranco de Valdeazores path. From here, and continuing along the latter path, we can reach the Collado de la Aviación shelter, and a little further on we can enjoy spectacular views of the Los Órganos Natural Monument, in addition to being able to see a large part of the province of Jaén on clear days.

It is at this point that we are offered two possibilities. On the one hand, the visitor can continue their walk along the Sendero del Barranco de Valdeazores, or opt to return to the starting point of the Sendero Barranco de la Niebla but by a different path to the one used to ascend, which makes it a circular route.

Along our way we will have been able to enjoy one of the best examples of what the rest of the natural park is like in terms of different types of vegetation. The reforestation with species of the genus Pinus are interspersed with areas of Mediterranean hardwoods where holm oak and cork oak are the predominant species in the sunny areas, while the shady areas provide space for the Valencian oak. All this, accompanied by a rich undergrowth of junipers, strawberry trees, olive trees and many, many more species that serve as sustenance to the ungulate populations that have made this natural park so popular.

HOW TO GET

From the old route of the National IV road, heading towards Cádiz, after passing the tunnel, it is found on the right-hand side just 50 metres further on. If it is accessed from the Aldeaquemada link, the tunnel must also be taken as a reference, taking care to go slowly once we see it to be able to turn to the left before it.
