Important announcement:
Section 11 of the trail (El Cerecillo-La Polarda), is closed to the public.
Sulayr, the mountain of the sun, is how the Arabs found Sierra Nevada, and has been the name chosen to refer to the largest circular path in all of Spain. Recovering the ancient name of Sulayr has also entailed rescuing countless paths in the Sierra from destruction. Through them, set in the middle of the mountain, between the peaks and villages, you'll travel 300 kilometres around this unique mountain along donkey trails and forest paths, traditional paths that different populations settled in its foothills have used while living in the Sierra . It is a circular path that surrounds the entire Sierra Nevada mountain range at an average elevation of between 1,800 and 2,000 metres, crossing hills and ravines, forests and meadows that are habitats for numerous species of plants and animals, and where we also find traces of agriculture and livestock. All of this makes the tour an unforgettable experience.
To take this interesting route, you'll need to plan your route well, choose the right time of year and be properly equipped, since the path is generally far from population centres and sometimes goes along the high mountains. With everything in order, you'll enjoy marvelous landscapes and extraordinary views of the Sierra Nevada, from the Mediterranean and North African mountains (visible on clear days) to numerous regions of Eastern Andalusia.
The Sulayr route runs almost entirely within the National Park and the Natural Park. Walking it is a privilege but also a responsibility, to respect the regulations that apply to a territory under maximum protection.
The 300 kilometre circular route of the Sulayr trail is divided into 19 stages, over the course of which you'll discover the beauty and uniqueness of its landscape and villages. The paths, walkways and cattle trails through which it runs are connected to other public use facilities such as the El Dornajo Visitor Centre or the La Cortijuela botanical garden, which will allow you to expand your knowledge of the area.
