The town of Trevélez lying on the foothills of Mulhacén, at 1,480 metres of altitude, boasts not only being the highest municipality in Spain and having one of the best trout rivers, but alos, above all, it is proud of having an exquisite long ham tradition, praised by Rossini and Alarcón and to which Isabel II granted an identifying royal seal as a supplier of the Royal Household.
The mountain air of Trevélez is essential in the curing process of these famous hams, of which it does not hurt to stock up for the hard climb to Siete Lagunas.
The Hondera lagoon is the lowest and largest of the seven lagoons that are located in stages in an elevated valley of glacial origin. In these meadows we find several Nevada botanical endemisms such as Plantago nivalis, gentian, large-flowered butterwort.
