The Somormujo observatory is located near the El Acebuche visitor centre, an area composed of a large lagoon complex, the Laguna del Acebuche, where a large number of birds concentrate throughout the year. Depending on the time of year we will see different species. One of the most peculiar, and resident throughout the year, is the Purple Swamphen, with intense blue plumage and long red legs.
In spring it is also easy to spot other birds that also breed in the lagoon, and perhaps even their chicks, these include: mallards, common pochards, grebes, great crested grebes and black-crowned night herons. In autumn and winter other birds flock here seeking more benign climates, such as: gadwalls, wigeons and red-crested pochards.
Driving along the A-483 road, El Rocío-Matalascañas, we take the exit at kilometre 12 for El Acebuche. Continuing approximately two kilometres along a tarmacked track, we will arrive at the El Acebuche visitor centre and the observatory can be found nearby.
