SIERRA NORTE DE SEVILLA - Ventana del Visitante

The valuable natural resources of the Sierra Norte Natural Park, declared a Geopark, have attracted many civilisations to the area over the ages. The landscape has been transformed by the different settlers who took advantage of the riches on offer. One example of this is Cerro del Hierro Hill , an official Natural Monument. Here the extraction of iron ore and the erosive action of the rain have revealed a karst landscape that is popular nowadays with climbers.
Here you will find undulating hills with predominant areas of pastureland with holm oaks and cork trees, mixed in with Mediterranean forest and some olive groves and vineyards. In some shaded, damp areas in the municipal districts of Constantina and Cazalla, there are the only Pyrenean oaks in the province, as well as chestnut trees used for their wood. Next to the Robledo Visitor Centre there is a botanical garden of the same name that is home to a collection of the most characteristic plant species of the Sierra Morena Mountains.
The Natural Park's hydrographic network also has a fundamental role in its history and landscape. There are three main rivers in the region: the Huéznar, in the central area of the park, the Viar to the west and finally the Retortillo, to the east. The first two have magnificent riverine forests, popular for trout fishing which is unusual in the province of Seville.
For those interested in hiking and cycle-touring, we recommend the Sierra Norte Greenway, an old mining railway line that runs between the old village of Cerro del Hierro and Los Prados-Cazalla Station, passing the the Cascadas del Huesna Natural Monument.
Bathing in the waterfalls is prohibited. The San Nicolás “beach”, upstream from the natural monument, is the only place that bathing is permitted.
Iberian imperial eagles, golden eagles and Bonelli's eagles can be seen soaring above the Natural Park. Carrion-feeders such as black and griffon vultures are also common. It is easy to see hooved mammals such as deer and boar. A good place to see them is at Navas-Berrocal, in Almadén de la Plata.
The ten municipal districts that make up the park have interesting heritage, with historic-artistic monuments such as Moorish castles, and Christian churches and shrines. You can see vestiges of a more distant past in Almadén de la Plata, where prehistoric remains have been discovered.
Meanwhile, traditionally produced items such as wine and anise from Cazalla de la Sierra and Constantina are internationally renowned. In Puebla de los Infantes there is also traditional production of sweets, olive oil in Guadalcanal and Alanís, and cured meats in El Real de la Jara and Almadén de la Plata. The exquisite local cuisine specialises in game - a good example is the venison casserole made in Las Navas de la Concepción.

One of the most popular activities in the the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural Park is climbing Cerro del Hierro *; a landscape that looks as if hundreds of steeples are sticking out of the ground. There are a number of routes of varying difficulty.
Hiking is the best way to actively learn about the natural, scenic and cultural attractions of this protected area. For this, there are a total of fourteen trails. The Las Laderas trail is particularly good owing to the variation in landscapes, and Los Castañares is good for providing shade in the summer time, or a beautifully coloured, leafy spectacle in the autumn.
Using the Sierra Norte Greenway (an old mining railway line) for cycling or horse riding is another option. Along this route you will come across the Cascadas del Huesna (waterfalls) and the Cerro del Hierro Natural Monuments.
Despite being in the mountains, water sports are also on offer. A good option for the summer months is a canoe ride in the Pintado reservoir, giving you a chance to cool off and appreciate the setting of the park. At the beginning of autumn, hearing the “bellowing” of the deer near the Cortijo El Berrocal and El Robledo Visitor Centres is an unforgettable experience.
