DEHESAS DE SIERRA MORENA - Ventana del Visitante

Nature
The "dehesa" is a system typical of the Iberian Peninsula. In Sierra Morena, this ecosystem consists of a continuous patch of mid-low mountains alternating with some higher mountain ranges, giving rise to an internal fragmentation that facilitates a diversity of habitats.
Meadows of holm oaks, cork oaks, Pyrenean oaks and Portuguese oaks occupy more than 50% of the area. Magnificent riverbanks and fine scrubland, featuring chestnut groves and areas used for agriculture complete its beautiful landscapes.
Human activity
The Dehesas de Sierra Morena Biosphere Reserve has an agrosilvopastoral system specific to the Iberian Peninsula and has been incorporated into the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. It serves several purposes: livestock, grazing, pasture, agriculture, “montanera” (rearing of acorn-fed Iberian pigs), browsing, hunting and agroecotourism. It gives rise to a deeply rooted way of life that expresses the philosophy of the Biosphere Reserves well: striving to seek a positive symbiosis between natural resources and human use of of fascinating
The dehesa is the economy backbone of the reserve. Measures are being taken to modernise its products, such as those derived from the Iberian pig, liqueurs, oils, wines and chestnut confectionery. This sector is joined by tourism, mostly in the form of hunting.
Culture
Prehistoric remains have been found in the area, such as the dolmens in La Sierrezuela, in Posadas. The Hispanic-Roman era stands out too, for the mining activity that took place, as well as the Middle Ages, for the border clashes between Christian and Moorish kingdoms, which explains the huge presence of castles and towers, such as those in Hornachuelos, Almodóvar del Río and Moratalla.
Other interesting examples of its heritage are the Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles Franciscan monastery, Molino de la Paloma (mill), Noria de las Escalonías (water wheel) and Barranco del Caño del Hierro fountain.

Without a doubt, one of the most popular activities in the Sierra de Grazalema is hiking. The natural park has about twenty routes, all of which show off the natural and cultural diversity of this protected area. Two particularly good routes are the signposted trail of Llanos de Líbar, which covers 19 kilometres of this striking landscape, and that of El Pinsapar, which traverses through amazingly preserved fir forests.
Water sports are available in the area: a canoe trip in the Zahara de la Sierra reservoir, for example, gliding under the watchful eye of an imposing rock face.
Another option is to explore the deepest depths of the earth, taking in the magnificent crevices formed by the action of water in this limestone landscape. Caving in the Cueva de Gato * or in the Hundidero * is also an unforgettable experience, where you will encounter stalactites, stalagmites and all kinds of underground formations. Canyoning too, is an excellent activity available here, involving thrilling descents down riverbeds. One of the best places to undertake this adventure is in the Garganta Verde *, where you will marvel at fascinating landscapes from an unbeatable perspective.
(*) Activities that require authorisation from the Natural Park.
