Reference regulations

Access to environmental information plays an essential role in environmental awareness and education of society, and constitutes an indispensable instrument for being able to intervene with knowledge of the facts in public matters.

Any natural or legal person, as well as their associations, organizations and groups, may request or receive environmental information held by public administrations and entities and those private entities that exercise functions or provide public services, regardless of their nationality or domicile.

In the field of environmental information, the reference regulations are:

Community Regulations

Directive 2003/4/CE of the European Parliament and of the Council of 28 January 2003 on public access to environmental information and repealing Council Directive 90/313/CEE.
Directive 2003/35/CE of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 May 2003 providing for public participation in drawing up certain plans and programmes relating to the environment and amending, with regard to public participation and access to justice, Council Directives 85/337/CEE and 96/61/CE.

State Regulations
