LOS VILLARES - Ventana del Visitante
A visitor centre, two recreational areas, three viewpoints and four signposted trails make this peri-urban park one of the most interesting in the province. These facilities aim to promote its recreational potential, one of the main objectives of this type of protected area.
Set in the Sierra Morena Mountains, the landscape comprises dense woods of pine and holm oak with typical Mediterranean scrubland. The recreational area in Los Villares is popular with Cordoba residents who prepare their food here on the feast of San Rafael. A prime spot to observe the San Lorenzo meteor shower is in the large, open-air car park. This area is highly prized by the locals, who use the trails and explore the environment in a respectful manner.
The Los Villares Visitor Centre has information on the landscapes of other protected areas in the province, and is informative on the different species of trees typically found in this mountain area. In the summer months, you can enjoy cool evenings, dining in its restaurant and kiosk-bar, while children can play in the play park nearby.
From the road junction leading to Los Villares you can get to the Santo Domingo Sanctuary, a building steeped in history and tradition, the site of an annual pilgrimage. Inside is the 16th-century tomb of San Álvaro, along with 17th-century sculptures and paintings, mostly by artists from Cordoba.
