His lines of research are the generation of artificial tissues through tissue engineering and the quality control of these tissues for their clinical translation.

Antonio Campos, professor of Histology and Tissue Engineering at the University of Granada, has recently been appointed by the Ministry of Health and Families as the new scientific director of the Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia.

Among his numerous responsibilities, Campos has held the presidency of the Spanish Society of Histology, has been dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Granada, president of the Scientific Council of the Health Research Fund and director of the Carlos III Health Institute. Likewise, he is a full academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Granada and its current president, in addition to also being an academic of the Royal National Academy of Medicine, occupying the Ramón y Cajal chair.

Throughout his extensive career, Antonio Campos has been an evaluator of prestigious scientific publications and the author of a good number of articles and books, participating in and leading 38 scientific projects funded by regional, national and European agencies and holding national and international patents.

Among the objectives to be developed by the Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia that the new scientific director sets are to promote research and health care by contributing to the collection, treatment, conservation and transfer of human biological samples to researchers and clinicians with the quality and guarantees necessary for them to achieve their objectives.

Likewise, Campos wants to promote research in the quality control of cells and tissues destined for research and therapy to provide new criteria for improvement in the preservation and short- and long-term suitability of the biological material to be used. Another of its objectives is to promote training and dissemination in this field both among healthcare personnel and in society in general. Thus, in relation to this last objective, the Biobank will promote a close information and training relationship with donors of biological material who altruistically contribute to achieving its purposes.

The Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia is organized as a network biobank formed by different associated nodes on provincial platforms, linked to health institutions and with a Coordination Node located in Granada. As a network biobank, it constitutes a resource platform that offers all types of biological samples and associated clinical data to researchers.
