The Torrecárdenas University Hospital hosts the 'II Conference on neurodegenerative diseases and brain banks'

Organized by the Neurological Diseases Research Center Foundation and with the participation of the Biobank of the Public Health Service of Andalusia.

The Torrecárdenas University Hospital has hosted the celebration of the 'II Conference on research in neurodegenerative diseases and brain banks' organized by the CIEN Neurological Diseases Research Center Foundation. The inauguration was carried out by the deputy managing director of the leading hospital in the province of Almería, Felipe Cañadas, the acting first vice president of the Almería Provincial Council, Ángel Escobar, and the manager of the Foundation, Mª Ángeles Pérez.

During the Conference, different presentations have been made for the analysis and situation of the different neurodegenerative diseases and they have addressed issues such as 'The Alzheimer Center model of the Reina Sofía Foundation' by Mª Ángeles Pérez, 'My brain advances research' by Mariló Almagro, president of the Spanish Alzheimer's Confederation CEAFA, 'The CIEN tissue bank and the neurological tissue bank working group' by Alberto Rábano, director of the tissue bank of the CIEN Foundation. Similarly, the work of the Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia has also been the protagonist with the presentations of Rocío Aguilar, from the coordination node of the Biobank of the SSPA in Granada, Rafael Sánchez, pathologist from the neurological tissue bank of the Reina Sofía University Hospital in Córdoba, and the head of Pathological Anatomy at the Torrecárdenas University Hospital and head of the Research node in Almería of the SSPA Biobank, María del Mar Berenguel.

The deputy managing director of the Torrecárdenas University Hospital, Felipe Cañadas, has detailed that for the hospital this day “highlights our technical and healthcare quality and the key to this is being able to count on the Biobank, which is a key element for the line of logical rigor. in research processes, in addition to very considerable facilities and competencies of our Pathological Anatomy unit. The professionals at this hospital are committed to research and treatment of these pathologies.”

For his part, the acting vice president of the Almería Provincial Council, Ángel Escobar, has congratulated the Association and the Foundation for the launch of this initiative that contributes to the dissemination of research into neurodegenerative diseases and the brain bank. "These types of meetings are essential to continue advancing in the knowledge of these diseases and to improve the lives of people who suffer from them," he stated.

Finally, the manager of the CIEN Foundation, Mª Ángeles Pérez, thanked the Provincial Council and the hospital for their collaboration in holding these Conferences and detailed that one of its objectives is to increase the number of active donors, which in Spain are of half a thousand people. “We work on diseases related to neurodegeneration and we have four platforms. A Biomarker/Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Laboratory, for sample processing, a clinical evaluation platform, where clinical assessment and monitoring are carried out, both of the patients treated at the Complex, and of those volunteers from research projects who come. "At the same time, a Neuroimaging platform, with a 3T Magnetic Resonance, and a Biobank, whose nuclear activity corresponds to the CIEN Tissue Bank, for the extraction, processing, classification and distribution of tissue."
