Last Friday, fifteen people visited the Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia (SSPA), one of the most advanced scientific-technical infrastructures in the Andalusian health research ecosystem. The activity was developed within the Innovation Spaces Visibility Project promoted by the Association of Science and Technology Parks of Spain (APTE), an initiative to which the PTS Granada Foundation has joined to open the doors of this space for researchers, companies, public administration and citizens.

With full capacity, the day allowed attendees to discover from the inside how the Andalusian Biobank works, what services it offers and what its role is strategic in advancing biomedical research and personalized medicine.

An essential space to boost health research

During the visit, participants learned first-hand about the mission of the Biobank: to provide human biological samples and clinical data associated with all ethical, legal and quality guarantees, thus facilitating the development of r&D projects both of the Public Health System of Andalusia and of national and international institutions.

The Andalusian Biobank is a network structure dependent on the competent Ministry of Health. Its organization integrates nodes distributed throughout Andalusia - associated with hospitals, research centers and specialized units - coordinated by a central platform located in Granada. This model allows:

  • Obtain, process, preserve and distribute biological samples of human origin.
  • Ensure traceability, safety and homogeneous quality standards.
  • Offer a flexible portfolio of services to adapt to the needs of each scientific project.
  • Facilitating researchers' access to samples and essential data to advance new therapies, biomarkers, precision medicine projects, and clinical studies.

Attendees were also able to learn about the Andalusian Registry of Sample Donors for Biomedical Research, a pioneering tool that allows any citizen to participate in research by donating samples such as blood, saliva, tears, nails, feces or other fluids. This record exemplifies societal engagement with science and reinforces the approach of open innovation and citizen participation.

A journey that reveals the potential of the Granada health ecosystem

The guided tour included detailed explanations on the management and conservation of samples in optimal conditions for scientific use; ethical protocols and that guarantee the protection of donors; the technical services of the Biobank, from specialized processing to scientific advice and support for research projects; the value of the Biobank in personalized medicine, where the availability of quality samples is key to developing more effective and safe therapies.

Participants highlighted the opportunity unique to know from within a fundamental scientific resource, as well as the clarity and professionalism of the team that leads this strategic platform for Andalusia.

The day not only allowed attendees to immerse themselves in an environment of high scientific value, but also reinforced the mission of the PTS Granada: to promote a model of open, collaborative and oriented innovation generate real impact on society.

With its participation in the national initiative of APTE, PTS Granada reaffirms its role as a connector and dynamizer of the scientific-business fabric, promoting the visibility of the spaces where innovation that transforms health is developed.
