Spain ended 2025 with 135 accredited clinical laboratories and other diagnostic services

The National Accreditation Entity (ENAC) has presented its 2025 Activity Report, which reflects the positive evolution of the Spanish accreditation system, which, in the health part, ended the year with 135 accredited clinical laboratories and other diagnostic services, which represents an increase close to nine per one hundred. 

Last year, the accreditation system exceeded 2,000 accredited entities and 2,500 current accreditations, reflecting an increase of close to three percent over the previous year. In this total, 135 accreditations to clinical laboratories are included, as well as 1,197 accreditations to testing laboratories, 167 to calibration, 528 to inspection, 256 product, 136 management systems, 37 people and 27 validation and verification, among others. 

In the health field, almost 40 percent of laboratories have expanded their specialties, which, according to ENAC, translates into an increasingly complete and reliable diagnostic offer for the health system. 

Among the new services accredited in the last year is the first accreditation to the Spanish Society of Cytology (SEC) for the organization of aptitude tests for laboratories that carry out two types of tests to detect cervical cancer. 

Likewise, the Niño Jesús University Children's Hospital and the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital have obtained accreditation to the quantification of CAR-T cells, a fundamental test in the follow-up of patients with oncohematological malignancies treated with CAR-T therapy. Likewise, the first accreditation has been granted to the biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia according to the ISO 20387 standard, for the work it performs as a Node of Granada of the National Bank of Cell Lines (BNLC). This accreditation specifically endorses its activity of custody and distribution of human pluripotent cell lines. 

At the meeting of the General Assembly of ENAC, at which the report was presented, the president of the entity, José Manuel Prieto, stressed the relevance of accreditation as "an essential tool to ensure the correct application of public policies, strengthen the competitiveness and provide confidence in an international context characterized by technological acceleration, the transition to more sustainable models and the evolution of European regulation "
