The Biobank of the public health system contributes more than 2,800 biological samples to cancer research

Thanks to this collaboration of patients and healthy people who act as a control group, in 2020 biological material has been provided to projects in breast, lung, endometrium, bladder, urothelium, pituitary tumors, melanoma and sarcoma The Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia (SSPA) has provided 2,846 biological samples over the past year for research into different types of cancer at the request of the projects, thus actively contributing to the knowledge of these diseases. Specifically, in such a complex year due to the problems derived from the pandemic, tissues (fresh, frozen and waxed), blood, plasma, serum, urine, feces and saliva have been provided, mostly from patients but also from healthy people, who act as a control group, essential in the development of the research.
These samples, which are stored under the strictest quality, security and confidentiality controls, are sent to the research projects that have requested them, the majority of which are carried out in public hospitals and Andalusian research centers, although they are also They have made requests from other autonomous communities, such as the Vall d'Hebron hospital in Catalonia or the Health Research Institute of the Principality of Asturias.
Thus, the majority of these samples have gone to active research in lung cancer, sarcomas and breast cancer, although samples have been contributed to other projects on endometrial cancer, bladder cancer, urothelial cancer, pituitary tumors and melanoma, constituting bioresources of great value to advance the knowledge, diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.
