Donors to the Sample Registry for Biomedical Research have increased by 25% since the pandemic

It currently has 2,075 registered people who contribute to developing scientific studies in different pathologies.
Solidarity and awareness of the population about the importance of research have been key in this increase
The Andalusian Registry of Sample Donors for Biomedical Research, integrated into the Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia (SSPA), has experienced exponential growth in the number of registered people since the start of the pandemic.
In this sense, the Registry currently has approximately 2,100 donors, 25% of which have registered since the beginning of the pandemic. This increase has been possible thanks to the information campaign that the registry launched last August where it encouraged citizens in general, and in particular those who had overcome COVID-19, to register so that they could participate in the development of research projects that try to advance knowledge of all aspects related to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, as well as the disease it causes.
These data have revealed the solidarity, generosity and availability of the Andalusian population to participate in biomedical research by donating biological samples. Thus, through the people registered in the Registry, biological samples and their associated data have been provided to 13 research projects related to oncological diseases, autoimmune diseases, COVID-19, quality controls of biological samples...
From the Andalusian Registry of Research Sample donors, different dissemination and dissemination activities are continually launched to raise awareness among the population about the importance of donating samples to biomedical research projects. Informing citizens about the tools that exist in the SSPA to contribute to the development of scientific practice is a key task so that they can participate and collaborate with R&D&i.
Currently, the information campaign remains open and people interested in being part of the Registry of Donors of Samples for Research can call 958 894 669 , write to registry.donantes.csalud@juntadeandalucia.es or register at www.soydonanteparainvestigacion.es
The Andalusian Registry of Sample Donors for Biomedical Research
The Andalusian Registry of Sample Donors for Biomedical Research is a tool that allows Andalusians to participate directly in the development of biomedical research. This is a database that collects basic identification and health information of people interested in participating in research. The body responsible for the Registry is the General Secretariat of Research, Development and Innovation in Health of the Ministry of Health and Families and the SSPA Biobank is in charge of its management.
About the Biobank
The Biobank of the Public Health System of Andalusia is organized as a network biobank formed by different associated nodes on provincial platforms, linked to health institutions and with a Coordination Node located in Granada. As a network biobank, it constitutes a resource platform that offers all types of biological samples and associated clinical data to researchers. At the same time, the Network of Tissue and Cell Transfusion Centers offers healthcare activity in this area framed in the structure of the Andalusian Health System (SAS).
